Im looking to obtain that 70's drum sound (Tommy Aldridge in Black Oak Arkansas, Ian Paice, Bill Ward, Bonham, etc). I currently have a 12 inch deep snare. Should I be able to get that sound with it or should I swap it for a smaller depth drum? I just want to avoid any piccalo sounding snare. Thanks in advance for any help.

I have just been on the same quest, to find the best 60's / 70s sound out of my kit.
This is what I came up with.
Changed all tom skins from Remo Pinstripes to Ambassador coated top and bottom. Bottom skin tuned slightly higher than the top.
Snare: Yamaha 14x5 Maple shell. Tuned lower on the bottom skin.
When I gigged with this set-up for the first time the whole kit sounded incredible. Deep, Warm and very reminisant of that late 60's, early 70's sound.
Hope this helps.

I would think Paiste Giant Beats or 2002s would be the choice cymbal wise.
Just a thought.

man, the first thing you gotta start with is (the heart of the 60`s & 70`s sound) a 6 & 1/2 X 14" Ludwig chrome snare drum.
Get one of those bad boys and you`re laughing.
