Your son plays drums, so you need a loud enough metronome. I think headphone metronomes can be a good idea. In addition, they also protect your son's hearing. Or you can get a metronome with an output to be connected to an amplifier.
I have a visual metronome, and I *never* use it. A metronome must have a sharp sound. BIP sound is not OK CLICK, TOK sound or something similar is much better.
When playing, ideally you should *not* hear the metronome sound, because you should play *exactly* on it. If you can hear the metronome (of course while playing), it means that you are not precise enough, and are playing slightly before or after the click. This requires a metronome with a sharp sound, not a BIP.
In my opinion, the presence of various time signatures (2/4, 3/4, 4/4, 5/4, 6/8, etc) is not necessary. A metronome has to be simply a time reference.
I hope your son can have a nice time with music.
