G'day guys I have split my bass drum head and am horrified at the cost of a new one. (I use a Remo Pinstripe) What is the average life of a bass drum head, say if it was played for 5 hours a week? Is 4 years a good life?

G'day! Chuck that head away!
Get'yerself a Remo PowerStroke3 head (http://www.remo.com/catalog/details.cfm?
CATEGORY=Drumheads&COLLECTION... ets&TYPE=&ItemID=1168).
It comes with a center impact patch that will take the hardist hitter!
They sound awesome too!, since the outer inside edge, has a mylar ring to help slighly muffle the sound. (very very slightly)
Cheers!

Proper care of a bass drum head is advised. Either use an impact patch or rotate the head every month, so as to strike a different part of the head. I've had heads last along time doing it that way. 4 years huh....lucky you.
