Howdy once again. I have a standard Tama 22' bass drum and i was wondering if anyone had advice on larger Bass Drums and the advantages/disadvantages of them...

My personal experience below:

Pro's: 1. Big booming sound if tuned properly. 2. Looks great with right kit (must be proportionary) 3. Cuts through better with a loud band. 4. Can drop big accents when needed.

Con's: 1. Bigger head cost more to replace. 2. Pain in the ass to lug around to gigs (especially if you drive a small car or play frequent gigs). 3. Toms usually need to be mounted higher and could alter your playing style. 4. Doesn't get the head rebound with foot pedal that one gets with a smaller bass drum.

Right now I'm playing a 20' Ludwig bass drum (1968 psychedelic-red) and it is the greatest sounding kick I have ever played and I have recieved more complements from audience and soundmen than any kick I've played in the past. The kick has a pure clean punch not a flappy boom. Please don't be afraid to try a smaller kick.

Good Luck,

I have a 24x18 premier 100% birch shell bass drum with a remo powerstroke 4 batter and a remo powerstroke 3 for the reso in smooth white which are pre muffled heads. But what you want to do in any case is to be sure that the beater is hitting dead center of the bass drum to get the true sound out of it! For what it's worth I just wanted to share!

Thanks,

Tim

Hi,

I have a 24"x18" Premier bass drum with a 100% birch shell. I like a deep sounding bass drum sound. That is why I tune my heads just enough to get the wrinkles out but yet tune each head at the same pitch.

Thanks,

Tim
