concert toms sound 'faster.' there is no bottom drumhead for the moving air to bounce off of; all the air gets pushed out of the drum all at once. the sound decays very quickly.

double-headed toms resonate more because of the bottom head. you also have more tuning options with a double-sided tom that you do with a single-sided, 'concert' tom.

for reference, listen to phil collins's 80's stuff to hear what single-sided toms sound like.

I love the concert toms sound.

I play mainly hard rock and I tend to limitate overtones a lot. I prefer a kind of 'fast' and 'dry' sound with the littlest ring. And with good heads and proper tuning, a concert-toms kit can definitely sound great. But of course it's more limited than double heads in terms of the range of sounds you can get.

my thinking is that live......... the sound bounces around a lot and that the single headed toms would be more 'cutting' due to the fact that the natural reverb of any room is goin to to compensate for the lost ringing............. just a thought
