I am a ignorant new drummer, I know what the difference is between a crash and a ride and a high hat. What other types of cymbals are there? For example what sort of sounds do you get from a china cymbal or a splash??
Thanks

There are several different types of crash, ride, splash, china-type, gong and hi-hat cymbals from various manufacturers. Find a manufacturer of repute whose cymbals you like the sound of (try them in local shops, hire in a studio etc) and stick with them. Basically the smaller the cymbal the higher the tone. The metals used to make it will influence the harshness/ warmness of the cymbal tone and of course you pay more for quality.
I use Sabian AAX mostly because they are versatile and give a great sound live. Paiste cymbals are much better in a studio, and if you want to be tedious and 'rocky' jump on the snoring zildjian bandwagon, but you can do
