might have an answer to. I know bottom line drums are made with birch and that higher class drums are made with mapel. Are there companies that use other woods or is this pretty much standard.

Obviously if you did hard enough you will find varients, I just mean as far as the main manufacturers go, like Gretsch, Ludwig, DW (they only make mapel I think), etc.

Any response is greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Generally, top-end drums are solid maple or birch- birch is not a low-end wood. DW and Gretsch use maple, Yamaha uses both (Maple Custom, Birch Custom kits, Recording Customs are birch). Some drums have layers of mahogany sandwiched between layers of maple like Sonor Sonic II's. Lower end woods include basswood, falkata, eucalyptus, and mish-mash pressboard woods. Beech wood is sort of a cross between the two woods sonically, but not a low end alternative. Yamaha Beech Customs and old Sonor Phonics are made out of beech. Tama, Pearl, and Premier all make drums out of birch and maple, and their entry-level kits (Rockstars, Exports, and APK's) use basswood, and Eucalyptus I believe. It really varies, but usually high end kits are 100% maple or birch.

Exports are mahogany. Pearl doesn't use anything but Mahogany and Maple. The lower end kits like Forum and Exports are Mahogany, the sessions are a mix of mahogany and maple, and the masters are maple.

Just a few more materials - during the '70's, Premier (and others) made sets out of stainless steel - too bloody heavy and expensive though. Another '70's fad was acrylic shells, the Ludwig Vistalites are probably the best remembered of these - John Bonham ring a bell?

Speaking of which, how long were Vistalites in production for?
