yeah... go spend $10-20 and buy a top-of-the-line set of ear plugs that are re-usable. I forget brand names off the top of my head... but there are many that cut down the decibels, but don't alter the frequencies that you hear.

Only for a while. The nerve death eventually accumulates until it doesn't happen any more but it takes years. You can accelerate the process if you want by puting each ear directly up to your speakers and run them at about 130 dB for about an hour daily.

It will take care of itself eventually.

There are better solutions. See: http://www.hearnet.com/text/mainframe.html

When I've been playing my drums for a while, my ears start ringing and I realize my hearing seems to be a little bit dulled for a while once I walk away from the set. Is this something drummers typically experience? I don't really like to put cotton on anything like that in my ears while I play because I can't really hear what I'm playing as well. Any solutions to this?

Yeah, it's called going deaf. Keep it up, and you'll lose part of your hearing and probably get tinnitus (continuous ringing of the ears). If regular ear plugs don't suit you because of the way they change the sound, invest in some Westone Musician Plugs. They have to be fitted by an audiologist and run about $150 or so. But, they don't change the sound. I have them, and I love them. Too bad I got them late, my hearing isn't what it was.

I've been playing for about 13 years and i have learned to use some type of ear protection. I believe you are incorrect, though, about not being able to hear what you're playing. I find that the ear plugs trim off some of the high-pitched sound like the cymbals (and that annoying guitar player). The high-hat sounds tighter. Basically, i believe that the ear pugs cut off some of the sustain so you get a more percussive type sound. It makes it easier to hear the details in your sticking. Nonetheless, if that wasn't convincing, you should wear the earplugs anyway. Don't mess with your hearing, you will regret it later.

peace and all that stuff

Well yes, but it also dulls the sound from the cymbals and it makes the drums more distant sounding. Additionally, I don't work with a band, I just play the drums on my own at the moment. I'm talking about using cotton, not earplugs though. That's all I've tried so far.

Well yes but I also use CS black dot heads on my toms so the sound is already more or less focused.

Cotton only cuts about 5db and just muds up the sound. Even cheapo plugs are better.

Chances are those are in-ear monitor systems. If you can swing it, get the Westone Musician Plugs. They're pricey, but well worth it. Just use something.

Go to alt.support.tinnitus newsgroup and see what pain and misery are in store for you if you don't start wearing hearing protection now. I suffer from Constant ringing in the ears (tinnitus), hearing loss and hyperacusis, which is the phenomenon that causes certain frequencies to physically hurt and frighten me. If you need more info, email me. I suggest you spend 140 dollars and get Westone molded musician's earplugs; they sound very natural and don't muffle the high frquencies like the others do.

Sincerely,

George Lawrence
