Does anybody know if/how Alex Van Halen played the beginning of Hot for Teacher. Sounds like two seperate double kick tracks, although the first one could be played w/ hands and made to sound like kick drums (I think I can hear a stick klick a few seconds into the beginning which might suggest the latter). The tom pattern, which comes in as the third layer, definitely could be played on one hand, but at that point it's all kind of a blur. Anybody? Please post an e-mail response as well. Thanks,

Ditto on that too. I used to play it when I was in 'Zero Discipline' one of the many VH tribute bands back in those days. I played it on my acoustic set thought. No one told me about those dab electronic gadgets of yet. LOL!!!!!!!!! Good luck. It's a doozy!

So you played the double bass part that fast in the beginning?!? Sounds like triplet 32s mixed in with a 16th roll. Once the toms come in it's just a matter of getting the quarter triplets on the toms above the bass drum roll. But still, I can respect anyone who can play that beginning.

You guys are making more out of it than is actually there. Your terminology is confusing things as well. There is no 'roll' anywhere in the transcription. The bass drum part is an eighth note shuffle pattern; the first and last note of a triplet: 1 a2 a3 a4 a1

I had a teacher show me that part...he used to teach at the PIT. Anyway, it's all one pattern played by one guy in one take...it's a little easier to show than to describe, here's the kicker...it's a double kick drum pattern and he showed me on a single kick kit (this guy was out there man...his name is Rick Gratton).
