Dear Fellow Drummers, Recently I came across a jazz part that required a riveted or sizzled ride cymbal. I have a Zildjian 20'. I decided to buy the Promark Rattler to give the sizzle effect. Now I want the cymbal to make less noise. Is still needs to keep its residue and tone...but cut back on the volume. DOes anyone have any suggestions on items or techniques on how to quiet cymbals??? Thanks,

Try some taping some paper towel on the bottom of the cymbal. This is good cuz you can just take it off when you're done, kinda like the rattler.

Hey Drumerboy1, it sounds like you are using the wrong cymbal for the job. You may want to invest into a Flat Ride from Zildjian. Those flat rides have a very soft, quiet sound and will not over power any of the other instruments. Just curious as to what cymbal you are using as a ride right now. And yes, I know it cost alot to just go out and buy a cymbal at the drop of the hat. I would never recommend placing tape on ANY cymbal. In my setup I two rides for two different rides, one heavy, on flat ride.

Personally I don't see why you'd want to soften the sound from your cymbals. To get a quieter sound, I just play softer.

An easy way I use to quiet donw my cymbals is to crank down on the wing nut or screw that holds the cymbal against the felt. If you can't crank down far enough, add another felt washer. My ride sounds great and is very powerful, but too much for my tastes. Instead of throwing all that cash to get a new cymbal just try tightening down the felt washers. You can almost tune your cymbals to your own personal tastes that way.

That's also a good way to break your cymbals if you hit them too hard that way.

Yes, but if you're trying to quiet them down, wouldn't you be hitting them softer in the first place?
