Hey,
I've been playing some gigs recently that require a minimalist hippie type rig. Very low key. So I set up as a 4 piece with a low ride and one crash/ride above the hi hats. I thought it would look even cooler if I mounted my low tom on a snare stand instead of off the mounting bracket on the crash stand.
And it does look really cool, only problem is it chokes the tom so much it now sounds like a cardboard box. I've tried replacing the resonant head with a diplomat and tried all kinds of tuning set ups, nothing has worked. I'm not married to the idea, but I thought I'd ask if anybody knows how to open up toms that are mounted on a snare stand. If not, that's cool because I'll just put it back on the stand mount.
Thanks.

Hey Guy,

I had the same problem as you have. But on my own I found out if you tweak not tighten the snare basket below the rim of the drumhead, in other words on the bottom part of the rim then you will get all the resonance that you need. I know this to be true because I also have the rims system for my 13" tom and found out that I didn't need it anymore! Hope this helps because it sure help me!

Thanks,

Tim

This also works as well for snare drums. I seem to have more resonance for my snare when I tried it. If this does not work for you, then please accept my apologies!

Thanks Again,

With all respect and apologies and if this offends anyone but I've got to say that a tom on a snare stand does work with total resonance if you take my advice from my reply! I'm 55 yrs. of age and have been playing drums for 43yrs. professionaly! This is not my first rodeo and will not be my last!
