Howdy all,
I am the proud owner of my very first drum kit. I have a Mapex Mars Series, 5 piece with Zildjan ZBT Pro cymbals, 16 inch crash and 20 inch ride with hi-hats, as a starter kit. I have never played drums before so I have all the questions a beginner. Yes, I will be obtaining a drum teacher as soon as I find the right one. But until then can anyone point me towards some basic beginner skills. I am interested to find out about my drums before I learn how to play them. I would like to learn what wood is good and not good, brand names, how to tune the different drums, what their roles are, what replacement heads should I use, etc., etc, etc. I am better to find videos as I tend not to retain any written materials, although if that is what it takes then that is what I will do. I realize the skills will come later. Any info is greatly appreciated.

Also check out the newsgroup rec.music.makers.percussion. It's alittle
You mean ....boring....not brutal. Long or Loud outpourings from drummers went out in the 70's after everyone realised they were generally tedious and did nothing but make the drummer look like a prat. IMHO a general overview of the last 20 yrs of drumming is that it has been about groove & finesse , an analogy very useful to appreciate in general conduct
Brutally yours Bob
