Hello all,

Don't kill me because I am a new drummer but I have a serious question. I have yet to drum but am very serious about buying my first set. I do not have aspirations of playing gigs or recording for years. I don't even know if I will like drumming. I talked to a music person who suggested I stay low cost for that reason. He showed me a set of 'Sunlites' made in California. My questions are simple. Has anyone ever heard/played of them and are they worth the price. He is offering bass drum, 2 toms, snare and floor drum, high hat cymbal and stand, cymabal and stand, all stands included all for $400. Please keep in mind I am a beginner and really just want to learn to jam with some friends and see where it takes me.

Any responses can be replied to here or at my home e-mail at

I suggest you spend just a little bit more and get a name brand set like a pearl Export for several reasons. The difference in sound is appreciable. the difference in the pedals and stands is astounding. You will have to replace the sunlite stands and pedals period. Buy the cheapest brass cymbals to start with them. they are very, very, inexpensive and replace them one at a time with good cymbals. Put your money into the set first. resale and trade in is also higher on a name brand. here is a good resource for deciding which set to buy.

I have played on a beginner Sunlite Set for a little over one year. It is a very good basic set. After about four months, I replaced the cymbals with Zildjin's. On my one year anniversary of playing, I replaced the bass drum pedal and the High hat stand. I suggest that you take lessons and have fun. The Sunlites are fine. If you like to drum, you will want to upgrade.

Hey Man,

I would go with the $400.00 deal that is if you are not sure you are going to stick with it or not and I would not spend a penny more! But the problem is if you decide you are digging it, your gonna wish you had bought a better set of drums and cymbals! If you don't mind me asking why do you think that you may not want to stick with playing the drums?
