Another good thing is to use dance type music, seeing as most of it is computer generated and the timing is dead on. Then just play a straight beat or solo over the top of the music.
Start with slower songs, then work you way up.

try to get some of the complilation(sp?) CDS that have ten or twelve songs on them. Look for something that has some bands on it that HE likes. If you keep his interest from the start, he'll WANT to play instead of it being a novelty. I speak from experience as a father of 6 year old twins...

Kiss and Stones are good ones to practice to... when I was a kid I used to thump away to 'brown sugar'... a good groove tune that inspires one to groove
