Can anyone help me here. New to drums and would like to know what sort of kit would be suitable for a beginnner. Any websites that give advice would also be useful.
Thanks

I am not a new drummer now but I was 2 years ago. I did exactly what you are doing now. Talk to anyone who knows anything about drums. I read these newsgroups, talked to friends, read drum sites.
I eventually decided on Mapex drums. I kept seeing their name everywhere over anything else. I love mine. I have the old Mars Series. And believe me, I looked and talked for a long time before I bought them. I highly recommend them myself. I got them for a good price of about $450 and cymbals were another $100 or so and the guys even threw in a few things like a throne and a cymbal stand and as many drum sticks as I wanted. I got a great deal.
Since then as I learn more about drums and meet other drummers and read magazines and go to shows I see Mapex everywhere. Everyone I have ever spoken to says the are a quality starter set and then some. I am very pleased and so are the people I speak with.
Just my two cents

Tama's arnt particularly special- yeah I wudnt say no if offered obviously but i wudnt say they are the best mid range kit- A yamaha stagecustom if payed for teh right price and provided with decent hardware (some scabby shops sell teh yamaha hardware seperatly and just give u shite stuff with teh kits) and with good head's on it its probably better than getting a Tama-, A yam stage custom is pretty much at teh same kinda level as the Tama except its cheaper because it is less hyped.

It doesn't matter what kind or brand name. The best advice for a kit at your level,is any 5 piece with a basic cymbal layout 'HH,Crash,Ride'. Worry about brand names when you are ready to spend some serious money.Single bass pedal.Learn to walk before you run.
