I just got some new skins for my drum kit, Remo Coated Ambassabors on the tops and coated diplomats on the bottoms. The kit sounds heaps better now but my question is in relation to wear. After four 1.5 - 2 hour session the 'white' on the snare is begining to wear out a little. There are no bumps or dints or anything wrong with the surface but the white is starting to come off already. Is this normal? On the 3 toms I have it is only ever so slightly happening in small specks.

Any comments appreciated.

IMHO it's perfectly normal - think about how many times you hit the snare compared to the toms.....

i only worry when the dents start appearing..... like after 2-3 hours

My experience is that Evans heads tend to last longer than Remo. Don't know why but they seem to for me. The coating on the Remo heads shows the affects of playing faster. I don't know that the head sounds any different but the wear is visible. Try Evans G1s if you want some thing comparable to the Ambassador. Or, go with clears and you won't have that problem.

Unless you're playing brushes, you really don't need the coating.

True you DON'T need a coated head if you're not playing brushes but the coating does have a function other than being the catalyst for a louder brush sound.

The coating is there for acoustic purposes; it warms up the tone somewhat. If you look at the coating with a magnifying glass you'll see all kinds of raised ridges and structures. This breaks up the soundwaves and disperses them somewhat, therefore cutting some of the brightness out.
