Any feedback on some heads that will allow my sons cheapo snare sound better? Now it is too tinny and loud and the sound hangs too long. Also the bounce is not so good. And finally, where can I get a new dampener from, a piece (the springy metal part) broke so I removed the whole thing but would like to buy a new one and reinstall, thanks.

Try using a Remo Coated Powerstroke3 (if he hits light) or a Coated Pinstripe (if he hits hard). These will cut some of the high overtones and cut some sustain. As for bounce, I assume you mean stick rebound. That is determined by how tight the head is. Don't worry about the muffler

While we're on the subject of head tension and rebound, how do you guys have your snare set up? Personally I use a coated ambassador for greater volume, and I keep it kind of on the tight side. I don't crank the actual snare up though, I think that chokes the sound too much. I have it tight enough so the snare doesn't sound like it's rattling and the drum has a good solid crack to it. I keep the resonant head tuned tight enough but not cranked.

a good drum head for bounce and a better sound would be a REMO ambassador batter head. also, there are many ways to dampen a snare....tape with a little cotton under it, and there are also plastic hoops that go over the drum that

further assistance, use the subject 'drum repair'
