Hi,
I know this question could have millions of possible answers but what I'm after is.
How does one set up a good sounding snare. I have a 7 x 14 inch steel Premier snare(nothing fancy) and I just cant get it to sound right.
The music I'm playing is mainly 60's and 70's stuff so I guess a standard set up will do if there is such a thing.
Kind regards

60's and 70's stuff? there's your problem!
You should just ditch the snare and hit your drum throne.

Wonderful advice, top-notch there. You're really helping a lot of people, you know?
If you couldn't tell, I was being sarcastic.

Here's what I know about the 70's snare sound:
tuned loosely, with LOTS of muffling. Try one of those remo muffl'r things (the plastic hoop that sits under the head, with the little foam ring) or something similar. If you still want good response, I'd tune the bottom head fairly tight, but maybe leave the snares themselves a little loose, and tune the top head a little loose. That should get you on the start to that fat tom-like snare sound of the 70's.

As always.
It helped people realize that not everyone thinks the same.

It was an insulting joke. So, technically, the other guy started it. I only countered it, so I fail to see what you're point is supposed to be.
And why am I arguing with you about this anyway?

who was he insulting? How did he insult him? The guy said 'how do you get that 70's snare sound?' and the guy said 'you might as well hit your drum throne' as an obvious reference to the widely held idea that snaresounds in the 70's were farely close to hitting a drum throne. There's no insult in that unless you're the person who started that fad, and i doubt this guy did, or else he'd know how to get the sound, right? It was just a joke.
because i've called you out, and now you're attempting to save some face by keeping the argument going in hopes that it will go away. Why won't you just admit that you overreacted?

Well, me for one. He insulted me by insulting 60s and 70s music, which I like.
I assume you HAVE hit a drum throne before, right? Hitting a bass drum sounds more like hitting a drum throne.
<< There's no insult in that unless you're the person who started that
That's the foolproof answer to every insult, isn't it? 'It was just a joke!'?

how is that an insult to you? I like the smashing pumpkins, but you running them down doesn't insult me. This is ludicrous.
*lol* god... you just don't get it.
joke!'?
well, yes... if you're the guy who made the insult, and you're about to get beat up... However, this one really WAS a joke.

Hey Man and with all kind regards to you,
I have a Premier 6 1/2 x 14 chrome snare and I've got to say that it does not matter what kind or size of snare drum you have you can still make it sound great! It's all in what type of heads you use and how you tune it! My personal preference is the remo coated emperor x 2 ply head (10mm per ply) making it 20mm thick with a black dot at the bottom of the head for the batter side and for the reso I use a emperor snare side drum head. These 2 heads will give you alot less ring without any muffling and also has a killer full sound! Works for me! Hope this helps!

Dead ringers would help the sound .Of the drum to
I know a 2ply head would help out a lot .But In the Long run ...Make's it's worse..
Use the 2-ply on the tomms and the snare just use the {REG} 1-ply on the snare drum ..
Or
Just use the 2ply on all your drums ...What make it sound like you want you use the Head's that you really need
LIke the Black dots ....Little out of date and the Clear head's .Have a shit sound to them .....Clear pinstrip's There are ok to use ...I would use them any more ..Me .I go with the Coated Remo white head's ..If you want a Really good sounding Tomm ..

HEY Man and I'm just going to LAY IT ON THE LINE and that is if it wasn't for 60's & 70's
music there wouldn't be any 80's,90's & 2000's music and that's the GOD'S TRUTH! And If you can show me how to get a good sound out of 6 drum thrones then I sure could save alot of money on a new drumset! But let me ask you, what would I use for cymbals? Oh I know, how about trash can lids, that should work real good! Hey man, pay me no attention because i'm just yanking your chain! But I will say that JOHN BOHNAM WAS AND STILL IS 1 OF THE GREATEST DRUMMERS OF ALL TIME! And if I may add DON BREWER OF GRAND FUNK RAILROAD!
Thanks
Tim

OK here's the key to the 70's snare drums sound...ready??? bottom head tight, top head, must be a white ambassador ,and tension not as much as a picolo, but fairly tight.... now here's the key you'll laugh but Bohnam did it... Line the inside wall of your snare drum with aluminum foil !!! when ya pull the sheet out crinkle it up a bit then open it up again and place it in, all around the inner shell, make sure ya poke through the air vent though...try it youll see, and it will only cost ya what!! 50 cents
