I have been playing the drums now for 5 years i started when i was in 5th grade and i have gotten a lot better with lessons and every thing but i have this drum set when i hit the first (high) tom it makes my snare ring my drum teacher said to trurn off my snare and see how close to the same pitch they were and he said they would be very close to the same pitch which is what was causing the snare to ring well i did that and my snare is way more high pitched than my tom do any of you have any suggestions to stop this ring please help its very annoying

Its possible they are an octave different? Just either tune your snare down slightly or your tom up slightly. Make sure you do both heads on either.

I haven't owned a drum set for over twenty years, but I have played one in church. I don't think there is much you can do. When performing with other musicians it is not noticeable, at least to me. I tune a snare so that it gives the sound I want. I suppose I might adjust a tom tom a bit if it reduced an anoying snare noise. Of course you can also adjust the tension of the snare wires, but that can significantly affects the snare sound. Alot of things set off the snares, someone speaking through an amplifier, the keyboard playing etc.

Change the angle of the toms and avoid playing facing into walls when rehearsing. Ringing snares are usually the result of sound vibrations bouncing back towards you. Also ensure your snare skins are nice and tight.

Has anyone noticed that new snares don't come with a damper?
