I'm wondering if any other drummers can suggest some good books to get. I have Stick Control which I'm using right now, I like it but the only thing that annoys me is practicing each exercise 20 times before moving on to the next one. I also have Syncopation for the Modern Drummer, which is ok. I have two others called Basic Drumming and the Drummer's Cookbook, although I haven't used these that much.

Have you tried using the Stick Control exercises as grooves? All the right hand figures played on the kick and left hand figures on the snare while playing a steady pattern on the ride or hi-hat. Or have the right hand follow the kick. You get some nice funk grooves going.

No I haven't but that sounds interesting. I'll have to give that a try.

Try William G. Street's 'Paradiddle Patter.' A book of a variety of phrases using various permutations of single, double, and triple paradiddles. One teacher told me to get it because he abhored Stick Control. (He also studied with Street as a kid in Rochester, NY.)
