I taught myself to play the drums to records of KISS,Sabbath,Ozzy,R&B,DISCO,FUNK,COUNTRY,ect... I have learned allot on my own. But I need help I want to play better from ear and I need someone to help me break down what I am hearing meaning...I need a way to simplify what I am hearing. Is there a trick to this my feel for time change is great I can feel the song needing change when the time is right. The band I am in will be playing out in July and I have to learn some covers and I cant read music very well. However I do learn quickly and any help on breaking things down is grateful. Thanks Drummer1980

just feel it first. get the basic tempo / time signature (usually 4/4). feel the eighth notes or the or the shuffle (which ever the song calls for) on the hi-hats. just the very basic feel for the song from the hats/ride and the back beat of the snare (usually on count 2 and 4 of each measure). after that, you can listen and feel for bass. don't get caught up in the whole 'oh, it's not exactly how he does it' yet... keep it simple. now you have the overall feel. work in some fills and crash placement. after that, go nuts on perfection to your heart's content! have fun!
