I know this is pretty vague but I am just begining to drum with a band looking at doing originals/covers. Can anyone offer me any tips on 'writing' a drum line for a song.
Any generic playing tips would be welcome also
Cheers

Listen, listen, and listen. Study very carefully what your favorite drummers do, and try copying them. I'm no professional myself, but I find that drum lines/beats come fairly naturally the more I listen. For very basic drum lines, I find that old weezer stuff is a good starting point. I learned from them that it's not about the complexity of the line, but how 'good' it feels, how it complements everyone else, etc.
Hope this helps,
Chris

Sound advice! Keep it really simple to start with. If it doesn't feel good to you, chances are it won't sound good. No-one wants to listen to a drummer who tries to play really fast complex fills but can't do it properly. Everything builds on the basic rythm, once you have this, fills should just come to you. Take Stuart Cable from the Stereophonics as an example - he's definately no Buddy Rich, but keeps it staedy and simple, and it woks really well. Listen to some stuff from their first album. Good luck.
