Hi, I have a minor dilema. I am going to purchase a pearl Session Custom 5 piece set very soon.

I have a tom question. pearl offers most mounted toms in several depths. For example, the 10' round tom comes in depths of 8', 9' and 10', and the 12' round tom comes in depths of 8', 9' and 10'. They also offer 14' round mounted toms in depths of 11' and 12'.

They offer a standard shell pack with the 8x10, 9x12 and 12x14 toms. My question is this. What will I gain, if anything by going with the deeper toms, ie the 9x10 and 10x12?

Also they offer a standard snare depth of 5.5', but also offer a 6.5' thicker tom, both with the same maple shells as the toms.

They have in stock the standard size kits, if I want the deeper toms and snare, I will have to order every piece individually, which I don't mind price wise, but they are saying a late Feb. early March delivery time.

Again, I was wondering what difference in sound I would notice by going with the deeper toms. No stores around here stock the deeper ones for me to try.

Sorry the question is so long, I would really appreciate any help. Thanks,

basically, deep toms have a punchier and deeper sound but need you to hit them harder in order to get it, or they'll sound crap.

Also, shallow toms are a hell of a lot easier to position, eg over a bass drum. I'd go for the intermediates, ie 12x9 etc.
