Oh, that's when you have someone bend over and you...oh wait, you said 'shot' didn't you...=)

Yes, it's basically hitting the rim of the drum as you strike the head so as to create more of a cutting sound, it's usually done more for emphasis and accents in your playing.

emphasis and accents

I've heard it used for this literal meaning as well as for the pratfall or gag stinger, but I've a new one. Once I filled for a guy in a country style band. The leader was in his 60s, an old pro. I didn't really know many of the tunes (I'm a dance drummer) but the person who recommended me knew I could play, (just came off the road) so I'm playing this gig. The old dude turned back and yelled rimshot! Cool, I can do that. Then he continues to turn around yelling rimshot, getting madder each time. I keep playing louder rimshots. After the gig they tell me that he wanted a cross-stick, or 'sock style rimshot'. He hated my guts!
