Does anyone have any recommendations as to what they have found to be the best method or product for cleaning and polishing heavily tarnished cymbals?

Zildjians cymbal cleaner works well. Be prepared to work at it if they are really dirty and darkened.

When I have a really dark cymbal to clean, I take it to a metal polishing company by my home. For $20 they buff it out and basically make it look like a brilliant finished cymbal.

Wright's Copper Cream. About $3 at your local grocery store. Try it and you won't ever use anything else.

Well, I guess if somebody wanted to get out the 'electron microscope' and examine the surface of the cymbal after being buffed by metal polishing company, so be it.

As for the cymbal(s) in question, I haven't had anyone at a club or casual being work, complain about em yet...

If you've been playing a particular cymbal for a long time and love the sound, you may end up distorting the sound just enough that you can here an audible difference. It may not sound bad per se, but I like the look and sound of non-brilliant cymbals.

for QUICK cleaning 'Barkeepers Friend' is awesome. but it's gritty, could probably eat up your cymbals in time. I have been using it sparingly to get the worst crude off...then switching to a creme cleaner to finish out.

Pete, Trick- Cymbal/Metal polish is great. Is goes on lightly and removes fingerprints, smudges and light tarnish w/ very little elbow grease required. This stuff doesn't harm your cymbals.
